Woman accused of murder in adopted child’s death granted $100K bond

Jennifer Long, charged with murder in the death of her infant child, had her bond lowered to $100,000 on Friday — an amount her attorney said she can make. Long, 35, is charged with the death of 20-month-old Alexis Long, who died in early February. Police said Long’s adopted daughter had a temper tantrum Jan. 29 after the family returned to their Columbus home from a trip, and that Long threw the child onto a changing table. The girl stopped crying and became unresponsive. She died days later.

Both Long and her husband, 46-year-old Timothy Long were arrested. Jennifer Long initially remained in jail with no bond. Her husband made his $5,000 bond on one count of second-degree cruelty to children shortly after his arrest.

Superior Court Judge Tracy Moulton Jr. granted Jennifer Long a $125,000 bond on Feb. 24. On Friday, defense attorney Tim Flournoy said Jennifer Long’s family has property worth $214,000 they can post instead of a cash bond. However, the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office requires property to be worth twice any bond amount.

That meant the property was $36,000 shy of being worth enough to get Jennifer Long free.

According to Flournoy, Moulton found that Jennifer Long was not a flight risk, not a danger to the community, was not a threat to any witnesses and likely would not commit any felonies while free on bond.

Chief Judge John Allen then lowered Jennifer Long’s bond to $100,000.

Jennifer Long remained in jail Friday afternoon.
