In 1945, Dennis was beaten to death by his foster father, Reginald Gough, 6 months after he and his younger brother, Terry were placed with the family. Terry was also subject to daily beatings and both children were barely fed. One month before his death a social worker recommended the boys be removed from the house, but no action had been taken.
