Joseph Maoping Adams

Boy born Oct 16, 2006 in Hangzhou, China and adopted to the US died December 3. 2011 from ingesting a large amount of vinegar. His death was ruled a homicide by the county coroner.

Girl adopted by Snohomish couple

A girl, removed from a polygamous clan in Utah, was placed for adoption with a couple from Snohomish, WA. The girl was subsequently sexually abused by her adoptive father. A therapist had advised the adoptive couple to start sleeping with the girl.

Five girls adopted by Scott and Drew Anne Hamrick

Scott and Drew Anne Hamrick adopted five girls while having three sons of their own. Four of the girls were sexually abused by their adoptive father, while three were physically abused by their adoptive mother. The girls were locked up and starved. The adoptive mother knew about the sexual abuse, but did nothing in response.

Scott Hamrick committed suicide soon after investigations started.

Children adopted by couple from Los Angeles county

Four siblings, currently (as of June 2011) in the age between 11 and 14, were allegedly abused by their adoptive parents. Between 2002 and 2008, several referrals of physical and emotional abuse were made, but were regarded unfounded after the children retracted their allegations.

In June 2010, one of the children again made allegations of physical and emotional abuse of the adoptive parents, initially backed up by one of the siblings, who later retracted the support of the allegations.

The Court of Appeals of California, Second District, Division Eight, believed the children were pressured by the adoptive parents to retract their allegations, threatening them with homelessness.

13-year-old girl adopted from Ethiopia in 2008, by Larry and Carri Williams, was found dead in the yard of her home. She died of hypothermia and was 30 pounds lighter than when she arrived from Ethiopia.

Mollie Sliker aka Laurne Clark

A four month old baby girl died due to blunt force trauma allegedly by Jeffrey Sliker who was in the process of adopting her. Sliker failed to obtain medical help for the child. Sliker's wife called authorities saying the infant was unresponsive. When rescuers arrived the child was dead.

Child adopted by John Hintz

John Hintz was charged with felony child abuse for mistreating his seven year old son who he and his wife adopted in November 2010. According to reports the child was forced to do push-ups with closed fists on rocks while Hintz placed his foot on the child's back. That was after learning the boy had stolen a candy bar.

Authorities say when the child could no longer do push-ups, Hintz forced him to run laps until he had blisters on both feet.

The child told authorities he also was forced to eat all of his Valentine's Day candy and drink five glasses of soda in one sitting, causing him to vomit.

In a previous abuse and neglect report filed by Southern Elementary, it stated that on Feb. 10, both of the child’s adopted parents met with school personnel and told school officials they no longer wanted the child to have treats or rewards because they felt the sugar was affecting his behavior.

Boys adopted by William Fox

Three boys adopted by William Fox were sexually abused by their adoptive father. William Fox made headlines in 1981 when talking a teen boy out of committing suicide. Fox later adopted the boy and wrote a book about his experience. He also received the National Father of the Year Award. William Fox adopted 10 boys in total, three of whom filed complaints about sexual abuse.

Kymell Oram

A 17 month old toddler in New York foster care was beaten by his foster mother's boyfriend after being left home alone with him. He suffered bruised ribs, a lacerated liver, bruised spleen, buttocks and torso among other wounds. He later died of lung and blunt force injuries.

Reports indicate his foster mother, Teyuanna Cummings, was in the process of adopting him. His placement was handled by Edwin Gould Services for Families.

Four children, three boys and a girl, were adopted by Kenneth H. Brandt from Texas in 2011. Brandt allegedly raped three of the children and allowed two other men to have sex with one of the boys. The adoption of one of the four children was not finalized yet.

Five children adopted by Jeffrey and Rebecca Trebilcock

One boy and four girls between the age of 10 and 13, adopted by Jeffrey and Rebecca Trebilcock, were systematically starved. The eldest child, a 13-year-old boy weighed just 49 pounds, fifty pounds below average.

The Trebilcocks, whose three biological children were fully nourished, had a custom made alarm system installed to prevent the children from entering the kitchen.

Two children were adopted from the Washington foster care system in 2004. The other three children were adopted from Haiti.

4 children adopted by Shanda Lou Yenglin

Shanda Lou Yenglin, a single mother, adopted four children (2 boys and 2 girls) from foster care.She had a history of substantiated abuse and neglect of her children dating to 2002, She hit one boy in the head with a wrench, other children were having their hair pulled, being hit with hangers, and being pushed against the walls.One boy was slammed onto the bathroom floor with enough force to crack his three front teeth. She did not seek dental repair until the following day, when she instructed the boy to tell the dentist he slipped and fell.

Yenglin lost temporary custody of the four children in May 2010 amid an investigation by the state Department of Human Services, but was nevertheless allowed unsupervised visits. During the third visit, Yenglin gave the children drug-laced milkshakes and led them out to sleep in a minivan running inside a closed garage. Shanda Lou Yenglin managed to kill herself from carbon-monoxide poisoning. The four children survived.

3 children adopted by John and Sonja Kluth

A 15-year-old and a 11-year-old boy and 9-year-old girl, adopted by John Edward Kluth and Sonja Kay Kluth, were allegedly beaten, choked, whipped, and burned.  In addition, the adoptive parents allegedly forced the youngsters to eat pet food, kept both boys confined to the basement, and locked the oldest son in a dog crate for up to two months.

According to news reports, the adoptive father claimed he and his wife were going to be accused of child abuse, but the children came to them already damaged.

The Canadian County Sheriff says the couple was receiving $4,500 a month support money from the state of Wisconsin, where they adopted the children before moving to Oklahoma.

Victor and Nubia Barahona (Doctor)



10-year-old twins adopted by Carmen and Jorge Barahona were physically abused. Florida Department of Children and Families investigated the family on several occasions. On February 14, 2011, Victor was found by the side of Interstate 95 doused in chemicals, his adoptive father had poured gasoline on himself and his adopted son, with the plan to set himself and the boy on fire. Police found the dead body of Nubia wrapped in plastic in the bed of the pickup.

Austin and Edward Bryant

Two brothers, adopted by Edward and Linda Bryant, both went missing. Edward (age 9 at the time) disappeared in 2001. Austin (age 7 at the time) disappeared in 2003. One of the boys was reportedly  denied food, spanked, forced to run up and down stairs and rolled up tightly in blankets as punishment.

The Bryant's moved to Texas in 2005 and never declared the boys missing. They kept receiving adoption subsidies for the remainder of the decade, grossing in $175,000. They were arrested early 2011.

Children adopted/fostered by Maurice Martinez

Oklahoma City police sergeant Maurice Martinez adopted 3 children and had 3 children in foster care (all boys), four of whom were allegedly sexually abused by their adoptive/foster father. Martinez also allegedly allowed his adopted children to physically abuse each other and never notified the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.

In addition, Martinez was also accused of intimidating witnesses from cooperating with police, conspired with a teenager to break into his home and steal evidence before police could seize it, and gave $400 to a victim to send him on a bus to Utah to obstruct the investigation.

Children adopted by Anya James

Six children adopted by Anya James were physically abused by their adoptive mother.The children were confined in small rooms with alarms on doors and windows to alert James if they tried to escape. They had to use kitty litter buckets as toilets. James homeschooled the children and allowed only minimal contact with the outside world.The children were malnourished because James severely restricted their diets, police say. Their growth was stunted to the extent they didn't go through puberty as teenagers.

Between 2000 and 2010, James received $750,000 in adoption subsidies from the State of Alaska.

Jaclyn N.

Girl (age unknown) was sexually and physically abused by her adoptive father and his son. The adoptive mother, Glenda N., failed to protect the girl.

4 girls adopted by Yang

Two 4 year old girls, nicknamed BaoBao and BeiBei were found chained to a water pipe. Their adoptive father returned once each day to feed them. Two more girls nicknamed Sisi and Lele, either both 6 or 3 & 6 yrs old were found at Yang's mother's house. Two the girls have been returned to their bio families, the other 2 are now in the Juijang SWI. All 4 were adopted as infants.

Upon examination doctors also found various straight line, u-shaped and horseshoe type markings across the boys body consistent with the buckle of a belt found at the house.

Girl adopted by Dino Cardelli & Nancy Cardelli

Dino Cardelli, a pastor of a Calvary Chapel church is charged with repeatedly sexually molesting a 13, now 14 yo adopted daughter, as well as molesting a 2nd child, and beating 2 disabled children with a stick. In Jan 2010, his wife Nancy Cardelli learned of the sexual abuse of the 13 yo, confided in a friend, eventually separated from her husband and then commited suicide in March. She didn't report the abuse to the authorities.
