CHENNAI: A family court in the Netherlands has rejected a plea made by a Chennai woman for a DNA test on a 12-year-old Dutch boy, whom she believes is her son. In an emotionally-charged courtroom in the Netherlands, three judges heard the 35-year-old woman, Nagarani Kathirvel, as she narrated her tale of anguish through an interpreter on June 15.

The court in the small town of Lelystad in central Netherlands told Nagarani that the child was too young to be put through a traumatic DNA procedure. Even her plea for just one glimpse of her child, allegedly kidnapped more than 10 years ago from a Chennai slum and given away in adoption, is not likely to be granted.

"I only wanted to see my son," said Nagarani, breaking down. "I was not going to demand custody of my child. I know the anguish his adoptive parents would go through. But after the struggle to reach the Netherlands, I will most probably be returning to India without seeing him," she told TOI over phone from the chilly environs of Lelystand soon after the court session.

The woman, living in the Pulianthope slum in Chennai, had boarded a flight to Amsterdam on June 14, accompanied by her husband, E Kathirvel (43) and a Chennai-based activist, full of anticipation that she would at least get to see her son, Satheesh Kumar, now Rohit Shivam Bissesar. Nagarani has now sought the intervention of the Indian embassy in the Netherlands.
