Oscar-winner tells PEOPLE she will raise adopted son as a ‘single parent’

Sandra Bullock revealed to PEOPLE magazine that she and her estranged husband, Jesse James, adopted a baby boy in January and that, in the wake of allegations of James’ infidelity, the Oscar-winning actress has filed for divorce and plans to raise the 3 1/2-month old child as a single mother.

Larry Hackett, managing editor of PEOPLE, told Meredith Vieira Wednesday morning on TODAY that Bullock reached out to the magazine to tell the story of the baby's adoption and to discuss her marriage.

The baby, whose name is Louis (pronounced Lew-ee) Bardo Bullock, was born in New Orleans. Bullock told PEOPLE she chose that name because she heard Louis Armstrong's song “What A Wonderful World” playing in her head when she first saw him.

Bullock said she was blind-sided by the news of James’ infidelity and, while feeling “sad and scared,” is filing for divorce and is finalizing Louis’ adoption as a “single parent.”

Bullock and James reportedly began the adoption process 4 years ago after James' daughter, Sunny, suggested they adopt a baby. The couple found out they had been matched with Louis in January, just as awards season was beginning.

Bullock told PEOPLE she didn't want the baby pulled into “the awards season energy” and after she brought him home she kept virtually all visitors out of her home, including stylists and make-up artists working with her for the awards.

“I did not want him brought into a world that would not have been too sincere to him as I wanted,” Bullock told PEOPLE. “I wanted to be alone with him as long as I could then we had to tell his story.”

Bullock reached the pinnacle of her profession on March 7, when she won an Academy Award for best actress for her work in “The Blind Side.” James was by her side and even teared up when she went on stage to accept the Oscar.

As for James’ infidelity, Bullock tells People that she had no idea until the day she got the call. Her next step after finding out about the news, was to pack a bag and get herself and Louis out of her house “before the vultures descend.”

“I really don’t know how our paths will intersect in the future, but that father I have known Jesse to be … is one that I hope Louis can experience one day, no matter how Jesse and I go on with our lives.”

Bullock had been involved in parenting James’ three kids from previous marriages, and told People that she couldn’t imagine her life without them, and the plan is for them to co-parent.

People received a statement from James, in which he seems remorseful and hopeful about reconciliation. “I know in my heart that I can be the best father possible to my four children and the mate Sandy deserves, and realize that this is an incredible mountain to climb. But I believe the steps I have taken in the last 30 days are the foundation to making this happen.”
Michelle “Bombshell” McGee revealed her affair with James in an interview with InTouch Weekly on March 16. She told In Touch, “I would never have hooked up with him if I thought he was a married man. He gave me the impression they were separated.”
As McGee's claims went public, Bullock canceled a planned appearance at the London premiere of “The Blind Side,” citing "unforeseen personal reasons."

On March 18, James issued an apology to Bullock and his children. In a statement given to PEOPLE, he said, “There is only one person to blame for this whole situation, and that is me. It's because of my poor judgment that I deserve everything bad that is coming my way.

“This has caused my wife and kids pain and embarrassment beyond comprehension and I am extremely saddened to have brought this on them. I am truly very sorry for the grief I have caused them. I hope one day they can find it in their hearts to forgive me.”

In the weeks that followed, another woman, 35-year-old Melissa Smith, told Star magazine that she had an affair with James after they met via MySpace in 2006. On March 26, James checked into a treatment center “to deal with personal issues.”

Bullock remained quiet about her marriage until April 6 when she issued a statement to PEOPLE denying an Internet report there's a sex tape with her and James.

“There is no sex tape,” she said in the statement. “There never has been one and there never will be one.”

There was no sex tape, but a picture of James in Nazi garb came to light. As for that photo, Bullock told PEOPLE the photo was stupid and ignorant and did not reflect the man she married. “Racism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, sexism, anything Nazi and a boatload of other things have no place in my life,” Bullock told PEOPLE. “And the man I married felt the same way.”

According to Hackett, Bullock was far from bitter in her interview. In fact, she sees the entire experience as perhaps, a positive lesson.

“Maybe I needed this to happen so I could be the best mother to Louis. We wouldn’t know the sweet moments in life unless we had the pain,” she said. “And painfully, I’m going to miss so much.”

Blind sided

After having taken over the crown as being America's most beloved actress, from Meg Ryan (whom adopted a girl from China in 2006), it seems that now Sandra Bullock has caught the adoption virus too.

Of course we all knew that Sandra Bullock, beloved as she may be, certainly has a blind side, given her marriage to Jesse James. It now seems she has a color blind side too.

I do wonder why the couple (at the time of the home study, SB and JJ were still "happily" married), ever got approved for adoption, considering JJ's past and apparently, present behavior. Or is it simply so that social workers are just as daft and blind as Sandra Bullock?

Celebrity blindness

Heard this news the other day; I was driving my daughter to school and every single radio station was advertising the news that yet another celebrity chose the adoption option for herself.  I guess given all the recent tabloid sex-scandal stuff , this American sweetheart was ready for her fans to focus on something else.... something new.

At first, I was glad to learn she adopted a child born/found in the USA, (a rarity for an American celebrity).  Then I cringed once I learned she adopted an infant, knowing damn well there is not only sooooooooooo much coercion taking place within the adoption industry, (after all, infants are a HOT must-have commodity and accessory), but there are soooooooooooooo many older adoptable children stuck in crap  American foster care, older adoptable children who want and need a sense of family/permanency, too.  There are how many thousands (?) of older adoptable children waiting to be removed from horrific nightmares found in-care, (problems that just don't seem to to get better or end), but because they are not cute, little infants... because they have serious problems related to a very hard life, they are overlooked as potential "permanent family material".

Makes me wonder.... how many American celebrities have adopted an older adoptable child dying to get out of American foster care?  How many American celebrities have faced that drama?

The final straw for me... the moment I almost lost my lunch, and it wasn't even 9am yet... was when I forced myself to look at the photo of SB and her own personal little Louis Armstrong on the cover of People magazine.

Ah yes....there we have it, the story that keeps on repeating...another rich white celebrity adopts (wait for it....) a non-white child, from a region/area that's not where the actress works or lives.  [What, no adoption agency was able to find the actress a white older adoptable child within the California or Texas foster care system?]

Bollocks to that!

Question(s) Re: Bullock

Does anyone know if it's true that Sandra Bullock's soon-to-be-ex-husband used to be married to a pornographer? And, if yes, then the even bigger question: did Sandra Bullock KNOW before she married him that he had been married to a pornographer?

Cute baby

Haha the look on Louis' face on the People cover is just classic. Too bad he now has to be dragged into the Bullock tabloid mess, for X knows how much of his life.

Good news

Tabloid rumor has it SB is buying a house/moving to New Orleans.  Theoretically, she can help little Louis keep/maintain a sense-o-tradition and culture.

<laughing>.... Can anyone imagine (in)famous high-profile/celebrity adopters like Madonna (Malawi), Angelina (Vietnam, Cambodia, Ethiopia), Meg Ryan (China), and the McCains (India) doing the same?

Bullock's home study was full of BULL

So did Bullock adopt this child alone, or did she cover up her failing marriage to a complete moron. Did she cover up his "straying".  Did she say that her home life was magical, that she will be the perfect mother.  She is so caught up in her own ego and stardom.  Did she say that she will cut back on her career, cancel the talk show circuit to be a mother?  Will she get up at night with this child, take this child to Mommy and me, to music?  Will she take him on a walk down the pristine streets of Hollywood for all of the photographers?

A bunch of crap, another deceptive  social worker who is licensed in fantasy writing.  "Our marriage is perfect, he is my soul mate, when he is not out doing porn stars and tattoo aritst. We are committed to each other.  We are not about stardom,,it would be nice if I got the Oscar.  We were meant to adopt a child, we can take this child out of it's culture and raise him in La La Land of fruits and nuts.  We will give him everything that his biological mother could never do, because, were rich and famous.  He will have the best of everything.  (everything but his roots, his mother, and his heritage)   Ms.   Bullock, I pry this new adopted child of your has enough of his own spirit to challenge you someday.

Adoption is real, it is a child, and this ain't no movie babe.  It may not even give you the fairy tale ending that you are so damn used too.

Oh hum,,another child adopted into dysfunctionalism.

This poor child will be a product of Hollywood and the lies of actors.

Hollywood types should not be allowed to adopt. They are filling up their egos.

regular people

regular people who adopt usually do, at least it says in the stuff the adoption agencies print up, they usually do have to wait 2YEARS after a live changing event to adopt (marriage, divorce, adoption, birth of a child, death of a child/spouse, major illness, stuff like that)

so it always kills me to see this crap happening; and for the first time I see people talking about the fact the Angie Jo did not adopt her first child as a single mom... and you have too bet neither did Sandra...

Single-mothers, celebrity-style

and for the first time I see people talking about the fact the Angie Jo did not adopt her first child as a single mom... and you have too bet neither did Sandra...

Good point.  Madonna was married, too, when she adopted her first child.

That "must be married" theme always cracked me up... more often than not, the married AP's eventually divorced, anyway, or at the very least, provided the uncomfortable discord and dysfunction so many "normal people" have grown to accept as "the normal family experience".

Never understood why so many see marriage as The Ideal.

In any case, celebrity adoptions have always bothered me because far too many seem to equate celebrity adoption to winning the lottery.  (How lucky that child must be to grow-up surrounded by so much wealth, and have (insert your favorite celebrity's name here) as a parent!)  That in itself sends the wrong message -- suggesting money makes everything, including parenting skill, that much better.

When I think about yet another celebrity adoption (single, or not) I see the much dreaded LBS (Lucky Bastard Syndrome) written all over it.  Reminds me of the infamous story, "Mommie Dearest", (more, specifically, Joan Crawford, another single-married-single to the nth degree celebrity mom with "chosen" adoptees).

But here's the kicker... what is any devoted fan supposed to do when ugly allegations are made against a much beloved icon-figure?  Ah yes.... defend the person's good name and stellar reputation and insist the terrible rumors (made by angry liars and petty opportunists) just aren't true!

Yea, because the white, rich, and famous (wielding great commercial power) never steal, neglect, or abuse.  <rolling eyes>
