Residency requirements:
The Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) does not have any residency requirement. However, some Recognized Indian Placement Agencies (RIPAs) may ask the PAPs to reside with the child for seven days in India cumulative from the time of identifying the child to the time of departure from India.

Age requirements:
PAPs should be at least 30 and no more than 55 years of age. Married couples must have a combined age of 90 years or less. These provisions may be relaxed in exceptional cases, such as the adoption of older children, sibling groups and children with special needs. However, in no case should the age of any one of the PAPs exceed 55 years. Single parents up to age 45 can adopt. PAPs should be at least 21 years older than the child.

Marriage requirement:
A married couple that has been in a stable relationship for at least 5 years. Single persons (never married, widowed, divorced) up to 45 years can also adopt.

Income requirement:
There are no income requirements for intercountry adoptions from India.

Other requirement:

• The financial status and health of PAPs should be discussed in the Home Study Report.
• A second adoption from India will be considered only when the legal adoption of the first child is completed, except in the case of siblings adopted at the same time.
• Same sex couples are not eligible to adopt.
