Indonesia - Rosdiana case

In July 2005, three Indonesian women identified as Rosdiana, Maretha and ER were arrested for persuading poor mothers around their neighborhood in Ciputat, South Jakarta, to sell their children to foreigners.

Maretha and Rosdiana were respectively sentenced to 8 years and 9 years in prison, plus 50 million Rupiah or 5 additional months in jail, for baby selling and document falsification.

The surveillance over the trafficking case had begun in 2004 when the Ministry of Social Affairs investigated the adoption of Tristan alias Erwin by Dowse. Tristan, adopted at 2-months by Joe and Lala Dowse, was sent back to his mother land at the age of two after the adoptive couple were expecting a child of their own.

Concerned over Erwin's welfare, the ministry investigated the case and found out that many other children had been sold by Rosdiana.

Rosdiana had admitted that she  sold between 60 to 80 babies to foreigners over the past few years.

The US-citizen, Juni Worten, had acted as a middleman, contacting foreigners who wanted to adopt Indonesian children, while an Irishman identified as Joseph Dowse was one of the foreigners who adopted an Indonesian baby from the three women.

In 2004, four other child trafficking syndicates were also cracked down by the police. Sri Mandagi, arrested in 2004 in Jakarta, sold over 880 toddlers to foreigners over several years. Ai Hwa, arrested in April 2004 in Batam, tried to smuggle 37 toddlers to Singapore. Istania Singgih, arrested in Jakarta . She sold 47 toddlers to foreigners.
