A 4-year-old girl in foster care who died Sunday was the victim of a homicide, the Medical Examiner's Office said yesterday.

Results of an autopsy conducted yesterday showed that Angelina Espalin died of blunt-force head injuries, an investigator said.

Angelina's foster parents took her to Tri-City Medical Center about 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Oceanside police Sgt. Leonard Mata said. The girl was unconscious and hospital staff members reported her head injuries to police.

She was airlifted to Rady Children's Hospital, where she died later that day, Mata said. Police investigators interviewed the foster parents but made no arrests.
