Lakshmi placed her daughters temporarily in an orphanage so they could get and education. The girls names and ages were changed and they were adopted by David and Desiree Smolin.

Smolins were told the girls were 9 and 11. The girls were about 13 and 16, having entered an orphanage in 1995 at 10 and 13. Read the Smolin's story here
