Ex-Policeman Arrested Over Jersey Abuse

public

A former policeman has been arrested by officers investigating child abuse on Jersey - and Sky News sources say the case is directly linked to the inquiry at the former Haut de la Garenne children's home.

Sky reporter Mark Stone saidthe 50-year-old man was arrested on the island at 6.40am in connection with serious crimes at the home and elsewhere on Jersey.

A police spokeswoman would not say what the crimes were or confirm his identity.

It is understood he is a former Jersey police officer who worked as a volunteer at the home before leaving the force to work with the Jersey children's service.

Police have uncovered human remains in four rooms below the ground floor of the home.

Yesterday, 14 more children's milk teeth were recovered and police have said their findings corroborate what former young residents have been telling them about abuse.

Tests on those found earlier in the inquiry have determined that most were "very unlikely to have come out naturally before death".

They also came from at least two children and all were found in underground cellars, apart from one which was located in a courtyard cistern.

As well as teeth, police have also recovered at least 30 charred human bone fragments. Some had been cut while others were burnt, indicating murder.

One theory is that the victims' bodies had been cremated in a fireplace.

Haut de la Garenne became the centre of an historic abuse inquiry in February after the discovery of what was believed to be part of a child's skull.

It is now thought to be wood or part of a coconut.

But the find prompted scores of people to come forward claiming they were abused at the home.

Some talked of underground punishment rooms where they said they were drugged, raped and beaten.

Three of four men arrested since the inquiry began have been linked to Haut de la Garenne.
