6-year-old girl in foster care with Joyce Luvern Burks was body slammed to the floor by the 14-year old son of her foster mother, causing her to suffer skull fracture, brain damage, internal bleeding and bruising to her eye, hip and arms. Ms. Burks delayed helping Katherine while washing the blanket on which the girl had been beaten.

Later five-year-old Claire Fowler received Katherine's heart through transplantation.
