NYPD Sgt. Charged In 5-Year Sexual Abuse Of Child

MANHATTAN—A New York Police Department sergeant has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a male child from 2002 to 2007. 

Jaime Katz, 33, has been an officer with the NYPD for eight years and a sergeant at the Police Academy for two years. Prosecutors said the investigation revealed that Katz met the male victim through another police sergeant who was involved with a mentoring program. From 2002 to November 2007, Katz allegedly continuously abused the victim on a weekly basis, beginning when the child was 12 years old. The abuse occurred in a number of locations, including the victim’s Manhattan apartment, the defendant’s car, the defendant’s house in Rockland County and the his sister’s house in Bergen County, NJ, as well as during various family vacations, prosecutors said. The investigation is continuing.

Katz has been charged with two counts of second degree criminal sexual act, one count third degree criminal sexual act and endangering the welfare of a child.

Katz was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court, AR3. Bail was set at in the amount of $500,000 bond or $350,000 cash. 5-19-08
