public

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A former Bakersfield foster mother who murdered a baby in her care will spend 25 years to life in prison.

Kathy Jean Scott was sentenced Monday for the beating death of 4-month-old Eduardo Calzada in 2004.

She faces 25 years to life in prison.

Jurors found her guilty of second-degree murder and assault.

Prosecutors said Scott slammed the baby on something hard, which caused his death.

The baby's birth mother, Silvia Calzada said she is glad there is finally closure. "Now i can go to my son's grave and say justice is done. I feel sorry for her family," Calzada said.

Prosecution lawyers said Scott showed no emotion regarding the baby's death.

Scott will be eligible for parole in 20 years. She will serve her time at valley state prison for women.
