Woman Arrested in Murder of 12-Year-Old Girl in Reading

public

A Reading woman is behind bars today accused of murdering a 12-year- old girl back in September. Police say the woman beat the young child with a broomstick after an argument. WFMZ's Karin Mallett joins us now live from Reading with the latest.

The victim in this case- Amira Brown was just 12 years old. She was a foster child in the care of a Reading family since last January - court documents show she was taken from her biological mother at the age of three.

Police say the woman now accused of Amira's murder is a friend of her foster mother.

Police say 40 year old Rose Boyd-Tolver admitted to beating 12 year old Amira Brown with the handle of a mop.

Amira was found unconscious lying on the floor of a bedroom on September 4th at her foster home on Summit Avenue in Reading.

Police say Amira and Tolver had an argument - and that Tolver then beat the young girl- perhaps starting in the kitchen and then moving upstairs to one of the bedrooms.

In later interviews, police say Tolver told them at one point Amira grabbed the mop from her- so Tolver squeezed her until she stopped fighting.

Police say Amira's foster mother later found her lying unconscious in the bedroom and called 911.

Tolver was in Berks County prison on fine charges, she was arraigned today and her bail hearing will be set at a later date.

We'll have more on this story coming up for you tonight on the Berks Edition.
