Brazil - Judge Luiz Beethoven Giffoni Ferreira case

From 1992 to 1998, Judge Beethoven in Jundiai, Brazil presided over 200+ international adoptions. At least 90 families in a group called Mothers of the Courthouse Plaza (or Mães de Jundiaí / Mothers of Jundiaí) claim their children were taken against their will. Both infants and older children and sibling groups were removed from the mother's custody.

Mothers signed documents allowing temporary housing for their children, only to never see them again, or were falsely accused of abuse of their children. Many of the children taken were blond and/or fair skinned.

The adoption of of Elizangela Cordeiro Rodrigues' children, Evelyn and Lucas, placed with a family in Germany, was reversed in Dec 1998 because the evidence of abuse was weak. Judge Beethoven retired from minor's court shortly thereafter.
