Adoptive mother jailed for abusing boy

"There is something seriously mentally ill about (you). This case makes me sick."

With those words, Judge Theresa Cisneros sentenced a Colorado Springs woman to two years in jail for two misdemeanor child abuse charges. Prosecutors said the woman forced her adopted son to live for five years in a tiny windowless space beneath a stairway with only a pail to relieve himself, to eat off the floor and to masturbate in front of his siblings.

The jail term was the maximum allowable.
