A House of Horrors

public

The prosecutor called it a "House of Horrors."

Five children suffered severe physical and mental abuse at the hands of family members.

Today, Barbara Kalama pled guilty to a felony charge of child endangerment, and several counts of abuse of a family or household member.

Her husband, Gabriel Kalama pled no contest to two felony charges of second degree assault and numerous abuse charges.

We warn you some of the details of the abuse are graphic.

This is the place where most of the torture took place.

Like the time one of the kids got caught shooting off fireworks.

Deputy Prosecutor, Lori Wada describes the event,"as a result he taped hands together, holding the fireworks, then set the fireworks off in hands, causing pain and burns."

Barbara and her husband Gabriel Kalama admitted to abusing five of Barbara's cousins.

"On February 1, 2005 I knowingly physically abused a family and household member," says Barbara Kalama.

"The defendant took a baseball bat and hit them on the head, causing it to bleed, leaving scars on both of their heads," says Wada.

It was also revealed in court that one child was made to eat a sibling's feces.

The abused children ranged in age from seven to fourteen, and what they had to live with....

"Was torture...it was absolute atrocities and cruelties that were done to them., that no child should ever, ever have to endure for over a year," Wada said.

The two have agreed to testify against Rita Makekau, Barbara's mother. And while the state agreed to a one year prison term for Barbara, it didn't do the same for Gabriel.

"All the defense wanted the state to do was to consider whether or not we would think about asking that, and I can consider that. I don't think that's justice, and that's why we did not enter into a plea agreement for his case," says Wada.

Barbara and Gabriel Kalama will be sentenced in November.

As for the five abused siblings, they remain together with a foster family and are said to be showing improvements.
