About the Founder

Shimeliss Demissie (Founder of Children of Africa/Hope Adoption Agency) was born in 1958 in the small rural town of Maji, Ethiopia. During his youth he attended Maji American Mission Elementary where he was one of the top five students in his class. Upon completion of the elementary education program, he attended Bethel Evangelical Secondary School in Dembi Dollo, Ethiopia. This was and still is a well known boarding school established by the American Presbyterian Church.

After his high school education, Shimeliss Attended Addis Ababa University for two years where he received a scholarship from the Presbyterian Church (USA). His scholarship allowed him to travel to the United States where he attended college at the School of the Ozarks in Branson Missouri in 1981.

Four years later, Shimeliss earned his BS degree in Chemistry and Agribusiness. He went on to completed graduate school at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield Missouri, where he earned his MS Ed. in 1987. By this time Shimeliss had fallen in love with America and decided to make it his new home. He settled in St. Louis, Missouri where he now resides.

As a product of the American Mission Schools, missionaries, and loving parents, Shimeliss always knew that caring for people and helping the underprivlaged was a top priority in his life. As a biological and adoptive parent  Shimeliss learned what children meant to their families;  love, care, sharing, understanding and togetherness. This ideology is what inspired him to reach out to the Children of Ethiopia, and the families of America, thus the creation of "Children of Africa", and the "Hope Adoption Agency".:

Through Children Of Africa, and the Hope Adoption Agency, Shimeliss hopes to

  • Provide adoption services to place children in loving homes in the United States.
  • Build an orphanage in Ethiopia for children who have lost their parents due to various reasons.
  • Establish schools and clinics in urban and rural areas in Ethiopia.
  • Raise the awareness of the situations contributing to the demise of educational opportunities to children in Ethiopia.
  • Give more Ethiopians a fair chance at life through adoption abroad and educational opportunities in Ethiopia.
