Two Salinas residents were arrested Friday on suspicion of torture, child abuse, child endangerment, assault with a deadly weapon and failing to provide for an 11-year-old girl.

Maria Cuadra, 33, and Jose Guevara, 36, are being held at the Monterey County Jail on bail in excess of $500,000.

Cuadra is the girl's aunt and adopted her after her parents died. Both Cuadra and Guevara admitted their actions to the investigating officers, police said.

When the girl was found, her body was covered with welts and bruises and she appeared malnourished, police said.

The girl was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
