This is what police are still trying to figure out five months after the 22-month-old's badly battered and bruised body was brought into Johannesburg's Garden City Clinic emergency room.

Tammy, who was adopted when she was four months old, was taken to the emergency room by her adoptive parents, Donovan and Zaibunisa Herman, after having seizures and vomiting excessively.

Examinations by medical staff revealed that the little girl had suffered brain and liver damage, as well as 12 broken ribs and multiple bruising, and were shocked to discover that she had been suffering from these injuries for at least three weeks before she was brought to them.
