Sexual Assault Suspect Arrested in California

Released- Thursday, July 5, 2007

Ripon California- Detectives from the Delaware State Police Major Crimes Unit have been investigating a case involving Vladimir Karpov, 50, of West Chestnut Hill Road in Newark.  Detectives learned that Karpov, a Ukrainian immigrant, traveled to Ukraine in 1999, and during this visit, adopted a 7-year-old female whom he brought back to the United States.

It has been alleged that while this adopted daughter was under his care here in Delaware, Karpov abused her sexually.  The victim, who is now in the care of another family in New Jersey, was able to work with investigators and warrants were ultimately completed for Karpov’s arrest listing 50 counts of Rape in the 1st Degree (f) as well as a single count of Continual Sexual Abuse of a Child (f).  U.S. Marshalls were contacted and have been working with State Troopers to locate Karpov.

In the evening hours of July 3, 2007, a break in the case came when authorities from the Ripon Police Department in California responded to a local motel in regards to a suspicious person.  Upon responding, Karpov was taken into custody.  He was found to have been possession of $15,000.00 cash and a handgun.  Subsequent his arrest in California, a routine computer check revealed he was wanted in Delaware on the aforementioned charges. Delaware authorities confirmed Karpov’s wanted status and are now awaiting his extradition.
