Attorney: Child porn victim adopted

Lives with new family under new name

(CNN) -- A young girl whose sexually explicit poses were distributed over the Internet has been adopted by a new family and is living under a new name, a U.S. attorney said Saturday.

Mary Beth Buchanan, U.S. attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, told CNN that the Russian-born child was initially adopted by a divorced, single man in that state. He is believed to have molested, abducted and taken the pictures of her in sexual poses.

That man is now serving a 15-year sentence in a federal prison and has pleaded guilty to producing and possessing child pornography. Authorities have not said whether the charges against him are tied to the abuse of his adopted daughter.

His name is being withheld to protect the girl's identity.

Buchanan said FBI agents discovered the child when they carried out a search warrant involving child pornography on her adoptive father's Pittsburgh home in 2003.

Agents questioned the girl, who told them the father had sexually abused her, Buchanan said. They then immediately placed the girl in a foster home, and after she was adopted by a family, they moved her out of Pennsylvania.

She is believed to be about 11, and authorities in Orlando, Florida said she was about 5 when she was adopted by the man now in federal prison.

The new information comes amid a search for the girl by investigators in Orlando, Florida and Toronto, Ontario, who believed she was in imminent danger.

It's not clear why federal agents did not inform them the girl is safe.
