Norwalk — Elaine Thompson, 64, a social worker who was aware that Michael and Sharen Gravelle forced some of their 11 adopted special- needs children to sleep in cages, avoided a jail sentence Tuesday.

A Huron County judge suspended a three-month jail sentence and ordered five years’ probation for Thompson.

During that time she cannot practice as a social worker. She counseled the Gravelles, who were sentenced in February to two years each in prison for four felony child endangering convictions and seven misdemeanors.

They remain free pending their appeal. Thompson, of Elyria, pleaded guilty in February to three counts of failing to report a crime.
