Jury selection started in the trial of a Lubbock man charged with Capital Murder.
Gilbert Escobedo is charged with killing 22-month-old Modesto Blanco on February 10, 2002. Autopsy reports show Blanco died of a blunt-force head injury. Originally, police reports say Escobedo's wife told police she started running a bath for Blanco, then briefly left the bathroom. When she returned, she said she found Blanco lying face down in the water.
Police arrested her, but a week later, Gilbert called police and according to officers, told them that he accidentally injured Blanco when he tried to stop the toddler from drinking out of the toilet.
If convicted of Capital Murder, Escobedo will receive an automatic life sentence.
